There are places you visit, and there are places that stay with you long after you leave. Matusadona National Park is one of those places.
Our journey into Matusadona began with the anticipation that comes with heading deep into Zimbabwe’s wilderness. As the landscape opened up, the excitement grew. This was not simply another game drive — it was an opportunity to experience one of Zimbabwe’s great wilderness areas, where the bush meets the vast waters of Lake Kariba.
The First Encounter
The moment you enter Matusadona, there is a feeling of being completely removed from everyday life. The roads wind through wild landscapes, with mountains in the distance and the lake appearing between the trees.
Then came the elephants.
Watching a herd move quietly through the bush, completely unconcerned by our presence, was a reminder of why places like Matusadona are so special. We stopped, switched off the vehicle and simply watched.
No rush. No noise. Just wildlife.
Wildlife Everywhere
Matusadona offers the kind of safari where you never quite know what is waiting around the next corner.
Elephants and buffalo dominate parts of the landscape, while hippos and crocodiles can be seen around the waterways. Birdlife is abundant, and the changing scenery keeps every game drive interesting.
What makes the experience particularly memorable is the combination of land and water. One moment you are following tracks through the bush; the next, you are looking across the enormous expanse of Lake Kariba.
The Magic of Lake Kariba
As the afternoon approached, we made our way towards the lake.
The light began to change, turning the water golden as the sun moved towards the horizon. In the distance, the mountains created a dramatic backdrop while birds moved across the water.
It was one of those moments when you simply put the camera down and take it all in.
Matusadona doesn’t feel like a destination you are merely visiting. It feels like a place you are temporarily becoming part of.
A Safari That Slows You Down
Perhaps the greatest luxury of Matusadona is the opportunity to slow down.
There are no crowded streets, no constant notifications and no pressure to be anywhere else. Your day revolves around wildlife, nature, the lake and the rhythm of the African bush.
Early morning game drives. Quiet afternoons. Golden sunsets. Evening conversations around the fire.
This is Zimbabwe at its most natural.
Why Matusadona Should Be on Your Zimbabwe Bucket List
If you are looking for a safari that combines wildlife, wilderness, mountains and the spectacular setting of Lake Kariba, Matusadona deserves a place on your itinerary.
And when combined with Mana Pools and Kariba, it becomes something even more special — a journey through some of the most remarkable wilderness landscapes in northern Zimbabwe.
